Election Integrity Issues:Paul Stokes, retired from Sandia Labs after working in arms control compliance verification and intelligence, has been engaged in election integrity activities since 2004. Stokes is coordinator for United Voters of New Mexico and has worked with the Legislature and election officials to bring the uniform use of paper ballots throughout the state and risk-based audits to verify the accuracy of voting machines.

He will share his knowledge in a question and answer format.

Prevention and Treatment. There are many programs and many strategies but availability is scarce. A continuum of care has been suggested. For whom: all populations? groups particularly at risk? people who have shown some risky behaviors? The focus of the talk will be on underage drinking which is a concern of many health councils. The speaker is Jolene Aguilar with Partnership For Community Action and program manager of the Underage Drinking Committee.

Theater Fundraiser

Anything Goes
Our annual theatre fundraiser will be at the Rodey Theater, next to Popejoy Hall at UNM in Albuquerque. Landmark Musicals will present Anything Goes, followed by a reception on the upstairs terrace for League attendees. The cost is $28 per ticket, and reservations are due by March 19. Libby Washburn, the new State Director for Senator Jeff Bingaman, will speak on Issues in the Federal Budget. The 2014 budget will be debated in early 2013 as the new Congress takes its seats. Senator Bingaman is an influential member of the Senate Finance Committee, and although he will not be running for re-election, he and Ms Washburn have a deep understanding of the issues that must be dealt with in future federal budgets.

Members will be able to weigh in on the League's local positions, changes to the Bylaws, question the proposed budget, and elect the next slate of Board members.

Olin Bray will present Political Mythbusting and Political Competence, a caucus that he will be presenting at LWV US Convention in Washington. What is political competence, what skills does it require, how to develop these skills, what are some of the myths that need to to be challenged, and what can LWV do to help increase political competence in the electorate.

Healthcare Reform after the Election: Kelsey McCowan Heilman, staff attorney at the New Mexico Center on Law and Poverty. The Center works with low-income New Mexicans to improve living conditions, increase opportunities and protect the rights of people living in poverty. McCowan Heilman has worked to ensure that healthcare reform will deliver on its promise of affordable, quality health care for the hundreds of thousands of uninsured low-income New Mexicans by advocating for Medicaid expansion, a consumer-driven health insurance exchange, and outreach and enrollment systems.

Dental Therapists in New Mexico: Joseph Martinez. Poor dental health is an epidemic in the US and even worse in rural states like New Mexico. Programs to train paraprofessionals to help alleviate the shortage of dentists will be up for vote in the 2013 Legislature.
